Why short distances and a personal interaction are still so important in product development today
Working together for ultra-pure water
Hakama has been working together with the Electronics Industry branch of Ovivo, now Ovivo Ultra-Pure Water+ by Ecolab, since 2024. Ovivo Ultra-Pure Water+ by Ecolab is a recognized partner for the production of ultrapure water (UPW). The company designs, engineers and operates water treatment systems. UPW is critical in the continuously evolving manufacturing process of electronics devices and for the semiconductor industry.
production processes for electronic devices and for the semiconductor industry.
Practical and scalable solutions for the chemical industry, process engineering and operational safety.
Ovivo Ultra-Pure Water+, which is now part of Ecolab, is a global brand specialising in the supply of equipment, technologies and systems for water treatment and the treatment of some of the industry’s most challenging wastewater streams. In total, the company has more than 150 years’ experience in the field of water management solutions.
The fruitful collaboration between Hakama and Ecolab’s Ovivo Ultra-Pure Water+ encompasses the design, development and manufacture of housings for devices such as the NanoPULS, a liquid particle counter.
We spoke to Pierre-Emmanuel Panouillot, head of the innovation department at Ecolab’s Ovivo Ultra-Pure Water+ division, which is based in Witterswil, a neighbouring town to Hakama in Bättwil.
He sums up the essence of their work: “What really sets our work apart is the ability to integrate chemistry, process engineering and operational safety into practical, scalable solutions.”
Product development among neighbours
Ovivo Ultra-Pure Water+ by Ecolab runs mechanical design departments, innovation departments and digital innovation departments across France, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, China and the US, among others, with Switzerland as the innovation hub.
Despite the company’s global focus, face-to-face interaction continues to play an important role: “We can simply pop over to Hakama, bring our 3D models with us and look through the latest requirements from our product development team together. We can discuss new options for surface finishes, adjust an angle here and there, and agree on changes quite easily and hands-on.”
Design as a factor of product development
When asked about her approach to design, Panouillot laughs a bit and says: “Our devices must, of course, look good – not just work perfectly.”
We wholeheartedly endorse this approach, as we at Hakama place great emphasis on integrating design into the product development process.
This integral approach certainly contributed to Ultra-Pure Water+ by Ecolab‘s recent nomination for the Global Water Intelligence Award. It is a commitment that should be an everyday concept in engineering and product development.

Consecutive serial numbers possible
